A personal interest in travel translates into a global career path for Savanna Edmiston.
I started at PPD as an on-site inhalation specialist in Morrisville, North Carolina, and was in that position for about three years. I had a lot of previous experience in pharmaceutical inhalation products and was fortunate to be offered the job.
A few years into my career at PPD, my partner and I realized we shared a growing interest in moving to Europe. I found an open position with the PPD® Laboratories in Athlone, Ireland, which would be a great development opportunity for me. I expressed interest to my manager and received support from the management teams on both sides to interview for a position. I was offered — and accepted — the position.
I admit, my interest in the position in Athlone was partially driven by my desire to travel. I had never been to Europe and would not have had the opportunity to see much of it living in America. Once in Ireland, I returned to school to get my master’s degree in pharmaceutical technology and quality systems, which heightened my interest in quality. Around that time, an opportunity opened in the quality assurance (QA) group in Athlone, and I started as a working as a QA auditor about three months ago.
Moving to a new country was both challenging and rewarding. It was harder than expected to find a place to live, buy a car and set up bank accounts. That said, it was an exciting adventure and, for a small town, Athlone has a great social scene. There are lots of great restaurants and pubs, and a vibrant nightlife. My favoritething about Athlone is the accessibility to the rest of Ireland. Because it is in the middle of the country, near a highway and an hour from the Dublin airport, travel is easy from here. I have had the opportunity to travel all over Ireland and to nine countries in Europe.
Throughout my career, I’ve always tried to be open to change. I embrace opportunities and communicate with my colleagues. For me, those core skills have been transferable to all the jobs I’ve held. I’m so grateful that PPD offers employees a breadth of experiences, personally and professionally.
