Madrid employees take their passion for helping cardiovascular patients outside of the office.
Each day, ten children are born with congenital heart diseases in Spain. PPD employees in Madrid took this statistic to heart by partnering with Menudos Corazones.
The mission of Menudos Corazones is to carry out programs to brighten and enhance the lives of children with a congenital heart failure and their families. With a passion to help cardiovascular patients already a priority for PPD employees, volunteering for an organization that helps both cardiovascular patients and their caregivers offered a natural connection.
“I loved the experience and you could tell the children and families were very grateful that we offered our time,” says Eduardo Gomez, clinical team management. “Of course, we had a plan, but ended up improvising. The children were a little suspicious at first because they did not know us, but little by little they opened up and the room ended up full of children, parents and volunteers.”
Pediatric CV patients were able to escape their day to day realities while PPD employees hosted a storytelling event full of fantastical tales and fun arts and crafts.
“At the beginning our audience was just two children, who were very attentive to the book ‘The monster of colors,’ and then more children kept coming,” shares Fatima Benito, senior feasibility specialist. “Although the plan was to read three stories, the children wanted this one over and over! They also wanted activity. So, we did everything: cook, cut-out shapes, care for babies, make spiders, color and assemble puzzles. Their energy was overflowing, their excitement was contagious, and their smiles were the best!”
