Carol Olson, M.D., Ph.D.

Senior Vice President, Head of Global Product Development

Carol Olson, M.D., Ph.D., serves as senior vice president and head of PPD’s global product development department, comprised of physicians with expertise in developing products for cardiovascular, critical care, metabolism, general medicine, women’s health, infectious and respiratory diseases, vaccines, oncology, rare diseases and pediatrics. In this role, she consults with industry and government sponsors of drug and vaccine development programs. Dr. Olson is a member of the PPD Pandemic Response Committee, a member of the Human Subjects Committee, chairs the Clinical Oversight committee for PPD’s Accelerated Enrollment Solutions business and is an executive sponsor for the company’s Women’s Empowerment Network.


Dr. Olson is an infectious disease physician with more than 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, holding positions of increasing responsibility in senior management throughout her career. She has expertise in antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic drug development, as well as experience in vaccine development.


Prior to joining PPD in 2012, Dr. Olson was a principal at Sapphire Oak Consultants, where she provided strategic medical guidance on a variety of programs, particularly in the area of anti-parasitic drug development. Previous to that role, she was senior vice president of pharmaceutical development and chief medical officer at Immtech Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Olson also served in various roles of increasing responsibility in anti-infective and gastroenterology product development and medical affairs at Abbott Laboratories.


Dr. Olson earned her doctorate and medical degrees from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where she also trained in internal medicine. She completed her fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Minnesota. She is a diplomate for the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds a license to practice medicine in Minnesota.
