Migraine Functional Impact Questionnaire (MFIQ)

Understand the multifaceted impact a migraine has on patient functionality

A migraine has a significant impact on multiple aspects of daily living for millions of people around the world. The Migraine Functional Impact Questionnaire (MFIQ) is a 26-item self-report questionnaire, developed to measure the subjective impact of migraine on physical functioning (everyday activities and physical impairment), as well as social and emotional functioning in the past seven days. It is intended for use in adults (age 18 or older) with episodic migraine (EM) or chronic migraine (CM), with or without aura.

The MFIQ was designed to be completed once a week to capture the week-to-week variability of the impact of migraine. A seven-day recall period captures the variability of migraine symptoms and impacts, while being less burdensome than a daily assessment and reducing potential recall bias associated with longer recall intervals.

This measure was developed using methods consistent with the regulatory guidance on patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures to support label claims about the benefit of treatments (FDA Guidance, 2009).

The MFIQ includes domains to assess the impact of migraine on multiple aspects of functioning:

Physical Function The Physical Function (PF) domain includes five items and generates a domain score addressing impacts on physical function, such as moving the head or body and needing to rest or lie down.
Usual Activities The Usual Activities (UA) domain includes 10 items and generates a domain score addressing impacts on usual activities, such as usual chores inside and outside the home, taking care of family and activities requiring concentration.
Social Function The Social Function (SF) domain includes five items and generates a domain score addressing impacts on social function, such as social interactions, being around others and leisure activities.
Emotional Function The Emotional Function (EF) domain includes five items and generates a domain score addressing impacts on emotional function, such as frustration, worry and being a burden on others.
Overall Impact on Usual Activities The Overall Impact on Usual Activities is a standalone question assessing the global impact of migraine on doing usual activities.
